‘Green’ south coast supports offshore wind

22 June 2011

Latest research unveiled today has revealed that the majority of residents living along the south coast believe wind power is the best way to generate renewable energy with 77 per cent stating they support the technology.

The public opinion survey also found that 81 per cent of local residents support the proposed Navitus Bay Wind Park. With 78 per cent of south coast residents going as far to say that they would be happy to live in sight of the proposed development.

The most supportive age group was found to be 16 to 34 year olds, with 91 per cent of this group supporting the project.

Other findings indicated that the majority of south coast residents saw many benefits coming from Navitus Bay Wind Park, with just 10 per cent believing no benefits would come from the development. Furthermore 73 per cent of those surveyed believed the project would be a good investment for the area and would help the local economy.

Speaking about the results, Chris Sherrington, Project Director for Navitus Bay Wind Park, said, “We are pleased that there is strong local support for the development and look forward to continuing to consult with the general public throughout the lifetime of Navitus Bay.”

Guy Madgwick, Director of Eneco UK said: “This project is of both national and local significance and will make a valuable contribution to the UK renewable energy targets to help combat the impacts of climate change and reduce reliance on overseas energy supplies. From the public opinion research it’s clear that the local population recognises these important issues, as 74 per cent felt it was important to develop renewable energy technology now to protect the planet for future generations.”
