Navitus Bay tops public poll for name of offshore wind park
The name of the offshore wind park located off the Dorset and Hampshire coasts and to the west of the Isle of Wight has been chosen by the general public following five weeks of voting.
The winning name, ‘Navitus Bay’, was suggested by mother of two Jacky Ellwood, a 44 year-old software engineer from Christchurch, Dorset. The word ‘Navitus’ means energy in Latin.
The winning name will not only be given to the wind park throughout the development period and beyond, but Mrs Ellwood will also receive a luxury long weekend break to Rotterdam, the home of Eneco, plus spending money.
On winning, Jacky Ellwood, who’s involved in the local community, said: “I’m delighted at having my name chosen for the proposed wind park. I devised Navitus Bay from the Latin name for energy (Navitus) and the fact it will face onto various bays along the South coast, such as Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.”
“I believe that the generation of green renewable energy needs to be high on his country’s agenda to supply the demand of future generations. As for Navitus Bay, if the project reaches fruition, it can be a legacy for my future grandchildren.”
Chris Sherrington, project director, said, “We see the naming of the offshore wind park being an important milestone in the lifetime of the project and look forward to Navitus Bay being used as the name in the development period and beyond.”
Eneco has recently finished a series of public information days in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight which were attended by just under 1,000 people over the course of three weeks at eight separate venues.
